An established Australian arts business

chapter.

Art Prizes connects prize organisers with artists through an established website, campaign service, two newsletters, social community and a substantial archive of Australian prize activity.

Art Prizes is a profitable business with a practical weekly rhythm. The core work is keeping the listings current and running campaigns across the website and social media.

The statistics, analytics and newsletters offer plenty of scope for someone who enjoys that side of the business, but they are optional. The heart of Art Prizes remains its listings and the campaigns it delivers for prize organisers. Some of the prizes advertising with us today have been part of Art Prizes since its earliest years.

Behind that weekly work sits an unusually rich record of Australian art prize finalists and winners, built steadily over many years.

The story behind Art Prizes

It was fifteen years ago...

How one self-built listing site grew into an established Australian arts platform.

I started Art Prizes in response to a simple problem: there were not enough reliable listings for artists looking for calls for entry.

I designed and built the first website myself. The response was immediate, and another programmer soon came on board to improve its functionality. Over the following years, we continued developing the website, its branding and the Art Prizes identity.

I also began visiting art prizes in person, everywhere I could. From the Outback Art Prize in Winton, Queensland, to the Black Swan Prize for Portraiture, now known as The Lester Prize. I still visit art prizes today because there is no better way to understand what they mean to their organisers, artists and communities.

Along the way, we have advised organisers on their campaigns, produced two books about art prizes and continued exploring prize data and analytics. Some of the prizes advertising with us today have been part of Art Prizes since its earliest years.

What began as a website I built myself has become an established Australian arts platform. It is now ready for its next owner.

What exactly is being offered?

More than a website: an established position in the Australian arts.

Over many years, Art Prizes has built a practical bridge between the organisations that run prizes and the artists who enter them.

The opportunity combines a low-overhead campaign business with owned media, trusted industry relationships, structured historical data and the foundations for further editorial and digital products.

Commercial activity

Evidence of repeat commercial demand

≈191months of website advertising booked across two financial years
18unique/discrete social media campaigns

These cumulative bookings reflect multiple advertisers and campaigns running concurrently, not elapsed calendar time.

Why is Art Prizes difficult to recreate?

Campaigns, audience, data and products reinforce one another to create a practical competitive moat.

Relationships create reach. Reach builds an audience. Audience activity becomes intelligence. That intelligence supports products with room to grow. Each layer strengthens the next, creating a moat built over time rather than a feature a competitor can copy quickly.

One experienced operator, or two people with complementary strengths.

It may suit someone with experience in the arts, communications, marketing, events or an affiliated industry, or a partnership combining relationships and sales with content, data and digital capability.
